Let’s face it: Winter’s the worst season of the year for your garage. The winter season demands its own
garage storage solutions. Unless you get organized the weather can not only ruin the look with dirt and slush, but damage your valuables.
Winter dirt and damage takes place when the following elements mix:
Cold: By itself, cold isn’t that bad, though it might be annoying when your car takes time to warm up. A bigger danger exists when you have rapid temperature fluctuations. These can deform wood and metal. In concert with moisture, melting and refreezing can crack concrete and unseat beams. Finally, some electronics can’t survive very low temperatures or extreme fluctuations.
While heating your garage would be too expensive, you can identify heated areas (near lights, for example) that will stick to a warmer, more stable temperature. Install the
Holey Rail™ nearby to give more delicate items a chance to thrive. At the very least, keep vulnerable items off the floor.
Dirt, Dust and Salt: Dirt exists all year round, but in temperate regions the move from autumn to winter creates a great deal of black dirt for snow to carry up. Dry melting periods turn it into dust. It’s not only an eyesore, but can clog garage equipment or even cause pitting. Once again, make sure you use a metal pegboard to keep everything off the floor, but also use a bag, cloth, storage box or other protective cover. You can store them on peg hooks to keep them dry and out of the way.
Remember that you’re very likely to carry salt into the garage through your shoes and vehicle – another incentive to keep your floor clear.
Moisture: Obviously, snow and ice present another reason to use a steel pegboard system like
Holey Rail™ to keep your valuables off the ground. Remember to keep your extension cords raised as well – even those rated for outdoor use might get submerged in melted ice. Threading core above the
Holey Rail™ keeps it out of the way, but still accessible.
